elote at the farmers market

we tried the elote at the market and it was so SO good.  i bought a small cup because i thought it would only be me and the mister sharing, but the girl tried it and loved it and we had to fight her to get any more for ourselves.

we bought some fresh corn from the market last weekend and made it ourselves - corn, sour cream, feta and tajin.  so good.

Farmers Market yesterday

Yesterday was the second to last Saturday Farmers Market, and it was a gorgeous day to be outside.

We finally stopped by the Terrior Cheese stand and ate a whole bunch of samples.  It was all so delicious.  We bought a smoked cheddar and I think I'll be back next week to buy one or two more cheeses for the last hurrah.

We also stopped for the first time at the Kombucha stand and sampled it.  The guy was pretty busy and wasn't able to chat much so we tried our samples and bought a small bottle of strawberry agave.  I found this article this morning about making your own Kombucha when I was googling, and it was pretty interesting.  Not that after sampling the stuff one time yesterday I want to dive into making it myself, but it was one of the only websites I recognized in my search, so I went with it.

We also got some beef jerky.

Last night we cut the sprouts off the stems in preparation for tonights Sunday dinner.  They are so small and adorable!  I am so tempted to try growing sprouts in our garden next year.

Thistle Farms is also a big presence at the weekly Farmers Market. Check out their website here.

Farmers Market July 30

I nearly made it out of the market without buying anything today. I resisted the zucchini,
the pickling cukes, the gorgeous lettuces, the carrots and little potatos,
but I could not say no to nectarines and cherries.
We've bought cherries a few times this year, and they've been.....ok.... but these
are the wonderful, deep flavored, meaty ones. Delicious!
We also bought 2 cookies - well, we bought one and The Grandparents bought the other -
this one is a oatmeal raisin pumpkin seed, and it's darn tasty.

Happy Saturday. When The Girl gets up from her nap, we are heading to
Wal Mart (wheee.....) and then home for chores and salad for dinner.
With mayyyyyyybe some ice cream for dessert.

Farmers Market Visit

We made our first visit of the year to the market last weekend,
Picked up some cherries, carrots and green onions.
Bought the Boy a stale overpriced cookie from the bakery stand we usually frequent.
Probably not any more.
The Girl charmed a vendor out of a free cookie herself - hers was much more fresh and delicious.
I was on the lookout for strawberries, but there were none to be found.
Did I wait too long?
Everyone had spinach and garlic scapes, it seemed.

Not many choices for ready to eat food - the Bellringer Bus was there - with a For Sale sign on it.  Kamloops needs a good kick in the pants some days it seems.
Why can't we support local eats, food trucks, culture?  Nope, not for us.
We'll take smoking in our parks, running food trucks out of business,
and banning sales of local wines in the stores.
What a town.

Bacon and Egg Bread Cups

The spooky skull may give you a hint as to when this photo was taken - it was not yet
Halloween, and the Farmers Market was still running.  We treated ourselves to some
bacon and egg buns from the Erwin's Bakery stand.  Delicious!

We made a similar dish a few years ago, but their buns were wayyyyyy better
than squished sandwich bread.

Farmers Market September 19

We braved the rain for a visit to the market on the weekend.

Didn't find a ton that appealed to us, but got some potatoes, squash, zukes, leeks and peppers.

The leeks were used that afternoon for a batch of Potato Leek soup.  One of our all time favorites.

Only just over a month until the markets are done for the year.
While I am glad to see a break from the super hot summer weather,
this time of year makes me sad for summer to be over, for the sunrise
to be later and sunset to be earlier.
I can't believe tomorrow is the first day of Fall!  Where do they days go!?!?

Farmers Market - September 5

It's been ages since we've been to the market this year.
Life, yanno?

It was a good, busy market, although there were some empty
spaces - stalls done for the year already?!?!

We brought home a big haul - country bread and olive and oregano baguette from Erwins Bakery, some small heirloom tomatoes from Thistle Farms,
as well as red leaf lettuce, red onions, green beans, zucchini, and MORE heirloom tomatoes.

I used the small heirlooms and the baguette for tomato bruschetta.  After many years of being unhappy with my attempts at tomato bruschetta, I'm finally becoming satisfied with my mental recipe.  I've based a couple of steps on the Pioneer Womans recipe, and the results are so delicious.

What you do - chop up some garlic - I used just under a pound of tomatos, and used 4 garlic cloves.  Chop the garlic fairly finely.  Heat 1 TB of olive oil and 1 TB of butter over medium heat in a small pan.  Add the garlic, and cook, stirring often, until the garlic is soft and beginning to turn golden.
Meanwhile, chop your tomatos into small pieces.  Place in a bowl.
When the garlic is done, scrape the contents of the garlic/butter/oil into the tomatos and stir.  Add a small splash of balsamic vinegar, and season with salt and pepper.  Shred some fresh basil leaves into the bowl, or a good shake of dried.  Let sit while you get your bread ready.
Cut baguette into thin slices.  Butter one side of the pieces.  Heat a pan over medium heat and add bread slices, butter side down.  Cook until the butter has melted into the bread, and the bread is lightly crisp.
Place the bread rounds on a plate, butter side up.
Top a slice of bread with a spoon or so of tomato mixture, and a sprinkle of parmesan, if desired.

Market Aug 15

This is probably the biggest haul we've bought at the market so far this year.

On the right are some pickling cucumbers, I'm hoping to make my favorite bread and butter pickles with at least some; Scott wants to try something new. Below are some carrots, nice and small and hopefully sweet. I'm looking forward to when the market carrots and bigger and cheaper; there's a carrot soup recipe in Super Natural Cooking that I want to try. Then 6 relish cucumbers we got for $1. I've never made relish before and am looking for a freezer relish recipe - does any such thing exist? Next are some beans - green, yellow and purple, and finally some Ronde De Nice squash. I've wanted to try these since last year.

Market and Fair

I'm getting bummed out; the market will close next month! How can it possibly already be September??? The bannock people weren't there today (boo!) but we got a nice haul:

Leeks (I'll be making Potato Leek Soup tomorrow), chives, lemon cucumbers, plums, peaches, honey and squash. And look what I found at the grocery store:

Tim Tams! I first read about these on a food blog and I've been wanting to try one for years. And now I have a box.

After the market and grocery shopping we went to the Knutsford Fall Fair. We saw some kids riding around on little pony carts (god, I really wanted to do that!), and checked out all the winners for food and crafts.

Have a great weekend!
