Sausage and Beans - JO Stylie.

This is another recipe I've cobbled together from an episode of Jamie Olivers new show Jamie at Home. I'm in love with this series. He's cooking some great simple food and I am coveting his garden and his outdoor oven. They are both stunning. This is old - I think I made this back in May but I just found the pictures and my recipe notes. I'm surprised I forgot about this one, we enjoyed it very much. I am not feeling too creative right now, so I've named this dish....

Sausage and Beans

250 g black eyed peas

soak the beans in lots of cold water overnight. The next day, drain and rinse the beans. Place in a large pot and cover with fresh water. Add to the pot:

1 whole head of garlic, top cut off
2 roma tomatos, cut in half
1 red or white skinned potato, cut in half

Simmer the beans, covered, until tender. 1 1/2 - 2 hours. Remove from heat.

Remove the tomatos, garlic and potato from the pot and set aside. Place about 1/3 of the beans and 1/2 cup of cooking liquid in a bowl and mash with a potato masher. Remove the skins from the tomato and potato and add the tomato and potato to the bowl. Squeeze the garlic pulp out of the skin and add that as well. Mash again, adding more cooking liquid if needed to smooth the mixture out. Season with salt and pepper and olive oil. Drain the remaining beans and stir in. Taste and season again if needed. (I didn't think of this until now, but if you had some fresh rosemary, that would be wonderful to add.)

Et voila! You have a big bowl of mouthwatering beans. Then we bbq'd up some turkey sausages and made a fancy plate:

Mmmmmmmm! Can't wait to see his show again. I've been watching more Food Network again lately; I'm enjoying it more than I was a year ago. I've been watching (OK this is going to make me sound like I do nothing but sit in front of the TV, but I swear I don't!) Ace of Cakes, Chef at Home, Food Jammers, anything with Jamie Oliver, anything with Nigella Lawson, Throwdown with Bobby Flay, Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares, Glutton for Punishment, and Barefoot Contessa. Mostly though, I've been MISSING Rob Feenie. Food Network, bring back my Feenie!
What about you? Do you watch Food Network? If so what programs are you watching? What don't you like? What shows aren't on any more that you miss?

I wish that the Food Network in the US showed Jamie Oliver!! Our programming here is a bit different, but I do like Throwdown, Iron Chef, Barefoot Contessa, and I'm a 30 Minute Meals girl!!

Lol, I saw it this weekend and totally got inspired. Plus beans are perfect for this time of year. I love the addition of the sausage. I like his show too, I am totally wooed by his charm.

Bean & Hamburger soup is on my stove top now. Yours looks like an excellent and easy one to do. I love this weather because I love fire in the fireplace!
I hardly ever watch any tv any more.

Sara, darling - I haven't seen the show yet but have heard the cookery book is now available. I like the idea of his show, one that another Brit, James Martin, is also doing/has also done. I might pick up the book next month when I purchase Diana Henry's latest.

Sometimes beans and sausages are the only way to go, whatever the recipe is called. I love that the tomatoes and garlic sit in the water with the beans.

This sounds tasty. The idea of simmering the garlic with the beans is interesting.

I often have the food network on in the back ground. Some of my favorites are Chef at Home, Jamie at Home and Tyler's Ultimates.

Peter - how could it not? it's gorgeous!

Deborah - you don't get jamie????? that's awful.

Katerina - the beans are good. I have to say that I was put off Jamie for a while, but I've come back around with this series.

Tanna - I wish I watched less tv. Can't seem to do it though. I always have it on for background noise.

Shaun - I will have to keep an eye out for the book, I'd love to have it.

Kevin - my husband isn't a fan of Tyler, and always talks back to the TV if he is on. It gets old fast.

In the UK, we have something called the UKTV Food Channel that you can get through SKY, I used to watch it all the time. I've weaned myself off it now. The celebrity chefs tend to get their programmes shown on the terrestrial channels then they move to the food channel.
I'm only just watching the lastest Jamie Oliver shows as we recorded them. I've looked through the book and it also looks really good. I'm abstaining from cookery books at the moment so it's on my Christmas list! Along with Nigella's Express, her new series however I am not loving. They've not made her come across that well, which is a shame. The recipes are great though for those days when you can't be bothered to ocok. How's that for a long comment...

Amanda - I've just looked and the new Jamie Oliver book doesn't come out here until next year. OH well, I guess I can wait. I didn't even know Nigella had a new show, it's not on here. I love long comments, thanks ;)

I am (sadly) without the Food Network while I'm out in Halifax. We get our TV channels through the university, and they don't subscribe to the FN. I especially miss Ina Garten and Nigella, not to mention the delightful Alton Brown.
