Nooooooooooooooooooooooo or, The Last Garden Update

Wednesday night we got frost. I've been sick all week so I didn't see the weather report that night. Thursday morning as I scraped a bit (and really, only a bit) of ice off my car windshield, it didn't occur to me that it had been cold enough to hurt my precious garden. But it was. After dinner Scott happened to look out the window and saw this:

I know, right? Breaks your heart. Sorry it's a bit blurry - I was quite emotional.

All the above ground stuff is dead. Very upsetting. What is most upsetting to me is I lost all my basil.

If only I had known, I would have picked it all and dried it. Now I am basil-less. And it sucks.

The rest of the potato plants died too.

I didn't share this with you because I didn't want to jinx it, but we had TWO ZUCCHINIS growing.

Dead tomatos and zucchini plants. But notice how green and vibrant the weeds are?

So we pulled everything and saved what we could. We pulled up 1 1/2 lbs of onions, 4 1/2 lbs of potatos, 1 sad wee zucchini, 4 lbs of green and somewhat red tomatos,

and 5 lbs of carrots.

Already almost all the carrots are gone. I took some to work to impress everyone with my mad growing skillz and we are slowly munching through the rest. They are so sweet and delicious.

So Garden 2007 is over. Here's to hoping that next years garden in BC is bigger and better. Or at least the same.

Oh man, you got the frost way worse than I. That's really too bad. :(
I covered my tomatoes with bedsheets, and other than some frost damage at the top, they're fine. Even my herbs are still okay. Amazing how small difference in geography make a huge difference in micro climate.

Of course your garden in BC next year will be bigger and better. Things actually GROW out there...

Oh Sara I do know how you feel about losing the basil! Bummer big time.
Those should make some wonderful fried green tomatoes!
My experience with a garden is, any success tends to increase the next years by a bunch! Good luck.

Morgan - if only I'd turned on the tv that night! Glad to hear your garden made it through OK.

Melody - what would I do with the greens?

Tanna - I am going to make fried tomatos. Any other suggestions?

One trick I learned from my parents as far as green tomatoes to is to wrap them in newspaper and store them in a cool, dry place for a bit. There is something about the newsprint that helps them ripen and turn red.

Or you can always do fried green tomatoes. :)

We probably have a month before a frost, but are plagued by drought! Great that you were able to harvest a lot of your produce!

jenblossom - thanks, we'll try that.

peabody - :( is exactly right.

deborah - this is early for us for frost, but this year has been insane. Par for the course lately. Yes, we did very well this year.

Ugh.. am so sorry to hear about your plants. Mother Nature BLOWS!

I'll kick her arse for you!!

I love your carrots.. we tried last year but only got wee lil stubby things that had no flavor.

Next year's garden is going to KICK ASS!

Oh no, not your garden :( At least you savaged some of the goodies.

BTW, if you thought you were jealous of me buying 12 cookbooks, one of them is solely dedicated to zucchini, all 140 pages :X I'll have to make sure I post recipes, just for you ;)

I cry the most for the basil too. It perishes so easily even in the fridge. When I lived in Calgary my neighbout taught me to pull up my entire tomato plants and hang them upside down in the root cellar (if you have the space to do so). The tomatoes would ripen on the plant and have a lovely thin skin as if they had grown outside under the wonderful Alberta sun.

Lis - thanks....get a kick in for me...

Carla - now I am even MORE jealous!

Valli - Thanks for the tip, I will remember that for next year.

Oh no!! So sad! I guess I need to start watching the weather - I don't have a whole lot, but I would hate to lose what I do have!
