growing avocado plants

I remember my mom would often try to grow an avocado plant from a seed by stabbing toothpicks into an avocado seed and sitting it in water.  She tried and tried but could never get one to sprout.

I recall trying a few times over the years as well, and just like her, had no luck.

Last year during the hours I would spend numbing myself by staring at videos on my phone I saw a different technique that involved peeling the outer layer off the avocado pit, then wrapping it in a damp paper towel, sealing it in a plastic bag and leaving it on a sunny window ledge.

Like this - Grow an avocado plant from seed

I suddenly remembered the videos a month or so ago, conveniently after buying a bag of avocados at The Boys request, and told The Mister about, who was like "Cool."

So we tried it.  First off, peeling avocado pits is difficult!  And if you have weak little fingers and nails like I do, it hurts.  Soak the pit in water for a day or so first, it might help.

The wrap the pit in a damp paper towel, put it in a baggie or plastic container with a lid, and put it somewhere sunny.  The sun hits our place at an angle and so we don't really have any super sunny window ledges, and so maybe that's why it took longer, but I would guess our pits sat around for close to a month before they split and sprouted.  But they did!  And since we don't have any super cool jars or vases like all the avocado growers on Tik Tok do, The Mister fashioned some little holders for them from plastic bottles.

This is 3 of our 4 pits and they seem to be doing well so far.  My fingers are crossed that they will keep growing and I'll have an excuse to buy some funky bottles for them.

Update!  No funky bottles, but The Mister picked up some mason jars from the dollar store.  They look super cute - look how tall that first one is getting!

books! of! mystery!

I have become a regular viewer of the ole Tickey-toks, as I like to call them to annoy The Boy, who is barrelling into Tweendom and gets annoyed by his parents no matter what we do.

One of my favorite sorts of videos is what I believe the younguns calls Book-Tok, about what everyone is reading.  A few months ago on there I saw some posts about mystery books from used book shops, in which you don't know what you are buying, only a few clues are given to you on the paper it's wrapped in.  Cute!  Shortly after that I came across a shelf of mystery books in a used book store here in town that I hadn't been to in years and years.

I decided to treat myself to one, and narrowed it down to 2 choices.  Then I noticed that I could sort of the see the title of one of the books, which was one I'd read it before, so that made my choice easy.

That is also more than I normally like to spend on a used book, but I was caught up in the excitement of it all.

I have not read it yet, but I will soon.

Back in May, the Kamloops Symphony held a book sale, but with a twist, since we were still under strict pandemic rules.  They moved the sale online, and you could order and pay for a bag of books from a variety of genres online, and then go pick it up.  In addition to different genres, they had 2 sizes of bags - 8 books for $10 or 20 books for $20.  I got a back of 20 fiction, and The Mister got a bag of 8 science fiction.

I was a bit disappointed in my bags, to be honest.  Nothing is very recent, despite them advertising they were picking from their "best" books, and a few are from the 70's and 80's.  I took them out of the bags, looked at them, took the photos and....put them back in the bags where they are still sitting in a corner of the basement with some other stuff to be sorted.

The Mister seemed ok with his bag of science fiction; there was even some excitement over a couple of them, so that's good.  I didn't get a photo of his bag as he put his away promptly, like a normal person.

I will get these on the shelf soon...ish and I will read them, but if I don't like one, I won't force myself to finish it.  I did that with the book I just finished last night, and I stayed up late to hate-finish it.  Not time well spent.

But in the end, the symphony got some money, so that's what really matters.

ranch pickles

A food trend from Tick Tok - Ranch flavored pickles.

This one didn't seem to have the staying power of the tomato and feta pasta recipe, but this one was easier and therefore more interesting to me.

See if you can keep up.

Get a jar of dill pickles.  Get a package of ranch dressing.

Mix them together.

Let it sit in the fridge for a day, them eat them.

One thing I did was to cut the whole pickles into spears before I added the dressing mix.  I thought it might help the flavor soak in a bit more.

Verdict - they tasted like....pickles.  So, not a bad thing.  But I personally didn't think it added a lot of flavor.  The Mister however, really liked them, so maybe it's just me.

If you like pickles, this could be a fun snack to try this summer.

my shaken brown sugar oat espresso journey (so far)

Since I mentioned my new favorite drink in this post a couple of weeks ago, I can't stop thinking about it.  It was delicious!  But I rarely leave the house, and Starbucks is pretty pricey, so all I did was dream of it.  And then I saw a video on the Tickey-Toks of a lady making her own, and I was like, I can do that too!

(BTW - another good person to follow on there is The Shaky Barista, who shows you how to make coffee shop drinks at home.)

So I made my own iced coffee at home and - it was pretty ok!

I put a couple of spoons of brown sugar, a dash of cinnamon and a tiny splash of vanilla into my jar, added a cup of hot coffee (6 oz pour from the ol' Keurig), and swished it around to dissolve the sugar.  I added a couple of scoops of ice, put the lid on the jar and gave it a good shake, then added milk to taste.  Not bad at all.

A friend told me about a brown sugar flavored syrup you can buy to add to your drinks, and just like that, I became the kind of person who has a bottle of flavored syrup in her cupboard to add to drinks.  I may also have become the kind of person who has a milk frother, but we'll leave that story for another day (when I've taken it out of the box and tried it).

It has a different taste than the actual sugar and cinnamon ingredients, but it's not bad.

I've also learned there are sugar free syrups out there,
which I might try once this bottle is gone, but we'll see.
Who would have thought I'd be so in to making iced coffee?  Not me.

my favorites the past while

It's been a while since I did one of these; I've been really focusing on falling apart mentally, emotionally AND physically the past while (year).  (or maybe longer).

I thought I might celebrate the one year pandemicversary by trying to claw my way OUT of the hole I've fallen in to/dug for myself, and since today is the first day of Spring (can I get a yeehaw),  it seems like a good day to start fresh.  Let's start by sharing some favorites.

Ready?  Let's go!

The Haunting of Bly Manor - I don't like scary shows, and I HATE jump scares, but this was SO GOOD.  And SO SAD!  I cried so hard at the end.  And it introduced me to Rahul Kohli who I now have a crush on, and so then I had to watch.....

which made me crush even more.

I will never stop being angry at Netflix for canceling this.

Essential oils - always a part of my daily life.  Peppermint oil is truly a miracle.

Journaling - I feel like this is something that could be good for me, and while none of my attempts over the years have stuck, I think I've found a system that might work.  I've fallen off the track with it once again but I'm working to get back on and might share my plan here one day.

TikTok - oh boy, I've really become hooked on the Tickey-Toks, as I call it to torment The Boy, who would eat, sleep and breathe on the app if we let him.  I am sure I will never make a video on there but I do enjoy all the mindless scrolling that can waste literally hours if I let it.  If you happen to be on the Toks, check out Kallmekris - she is HILARIOUS and also from BC!  Woot!  My other favorite is ghosthoney.  I adore him.

And from the Tickey-Toks I discovered my new favorite drink that I've had once so far but it was so good - Iced Brown Sugar Oat Shaken Espresso.  So delicious.

Friends, I hope you have a good day.  Do something nice for yourself today, and if you can, for someone else as well.
