Here's how 2021 book club compares to the past few years -

55 books in 2021 - 7 audiobooks

51 books in 2019 - 9 audiobooks

48 books in 2018

41 books in 2017

26 books in 2016

2022 was a bad year for me in a lot of ways including reading.  I wish I had read more and stared at my phone or the floor less, but it is what it is.  Part of that can be attributed to the fact that I have quite a few books that I am not particularly excited about reading - secondhand books because new books are pricey, and there isn't always great selection at the secondhand stores.

I have also switched my book rule from - you have to finish it if you start it to - if you don't like it, get rid of it and move on.  And I am much happier for that change.  I'd like to say that you might see a fair few self help books on the 2023 list as in perhaps I'll finally get around to reading some of the books I bought during my post-partum days, but realistically, the chances are low.

2021 book club review

In 2021 I read 55 books.

Memoirs by female authors - 2
Memoirs by male authors -2

Non-fiction by female authors - 7
Non-fiction by male authors - 4

Fiction by female authors - 26
Fiction by male authors - 7

Audio books -7
5 fiction audiobooks by female authors
1 fiction audiobook by male author
1 non fiction audiobook by male author

I was very inconsistent with reading this year - some months I read multiple books, then I wouldn't pick up the next book for 3 weeks.  I tried to do more non fiction reading, in part to get some of those self help books that I've had on my shelves for years out of here, and in part for working on better habits, which include reading every day (HA!) and mixing up what I read.  It didn't always go as envisioned.

Here's how 2021 book club compares to the past few years -

51 books in 2019 - 9 audiobooks

48 books in 2018

41 books in 2017

26 books in 2016

I'm considering starting a new reading journal for 2022 (22!!!! jesus.) for no particular reason other than it can join all my other clutter and my habit journal that I routinely ignore then try to  bring up to date weeks later.  But it could be fun.  Definitely thinking about it.

2020 book club review

 In 2020 I read 41 books.

Memoirs by female authors - 5
Memoirs by male authors - 1

Non-fiction by female authors -5
Non-fiction by male authors -2

Fiction by female authors -22
Fiction by male authors -6

Audio books -0

The one that made me cry the most - Spoiler Alert: The Hero Dies
The one that made me want to travel to the Great Bear Rainforest for small towns and Sasquatches - In the Valleys of the Noble Beyond
The one that made me uncomfortable - Little Fires Everywhere
The one that would make a great movie - My Sister, the Serial Killer
The one that made me jumpy and turn on all the lights - The Hunger

Here's how that compares to the past few years -

51 books in 2019 - 9 audiobooks

48 books in 2018

41 books in 2017

26 books in 2016

If you take away the audiobooks from 2019 I came out pretty much even with last year.  I could have read more books this year but working lots and plenty of staring off into space contemplating this year kept me busy.

I don't have the same big stack of unread fiction books waiting for me in 2021 that I've had in past years, and I've got a lot of yoga/diet/nutrition/self help books laying around that I should either read or get rid of, and I'd realllllly like to pull myself out of this years long slump I'm in physically and emotionally, so it could be good to get into some of those.

2019 book club review

Book Club has become the biggest part of my blog, and I'm more than ok with that.

The idea of being part of a "real" book club out in the world makes me nervous - people?  No thanks.  My book club for one makes me happy.

In 2019 I read 51 books.

I started to write that I had read mostly fiction, with a few memoirs and audio books thrown in, but then I decided to review the list and break it down into more general genres to see what I had read.

Memoirs - 20
Non-fiction -7
Fiction by female authors - 11
Fiction by male authors - 4
Audio books - 9

Way more memoirs than I expected!

I also checked back since I started by Book Club tag to see how this years 51 compared to other years

48 books in 2018

41 books in 2017

26 books in 2016

So as my kids get older and more independent, my number of books read increases.  😀

I've got lots of books kicking around the house and a few holds I hope come in the library soon, my fingers are crossed for an even better Book Club year in 2020.
