Garden 2009 - first shots

I'm tired and completely uninspired by recipes and food lately. I've got a couple of things up my sleeve but none of them are fully formed and ready to share.

So it seems that Spring may finally be showing it's head around these parts.....about time! I noticed something in the garden a couple of weeks ago - thought it was a piece of garbage that had blown in with the wind, but to my delight it was my rhubarb plant coming out of hibernation! I was blown away, it looked so horrible last year we were sure it was not going to survive. Our parsley is also making a surprising comeback as well. And the mint, which looked awful last year too, it's popping up. Grape vine and raspberries aren't looking too good, but it is still early.

Scott bought me a couple of presents today - a sage plant, lemon thyme, and a broccoli. They won't be put in the ground yet, but soon my pretties........soon.

What are your garden plans for the year? Have you started working on it yet? What are you planting? What's your best producer every year?

Oh I'm so excited for your rhubarb and garden goodies.

I'm not sure I'm going to have much of a garden this year. I got a CSA share this year and between that and the local farmer's market, I may just plant some flowers and maybe a tomato plant. We'll see...

Now I just need some warmth and sunshine to make this stuff grow!

Hmm, you're tired, not into food, giving up some of your blogging obligations, your husband is bringing you gifts. Are you pregnant?

I don't garden. I kill everything. I would like to grow some fresh herbs because they are so expensive in the grocery store but I don't really have a place for a container garden.

Rhubarb plant! That is so grand!

Love the plants that just keep coming back for more.

I think our 'garden' is going to be limited to herbs this year. I need to take a couple of photos now that you mention it.

I'm sorry you feel uninspired! I think having a garden full of beautiful vegetation might help, though. I myself don't have a garden but my parents will be growing basil and tomatoes and hopefully some summer squash and cilantro at my behest.

LOL! How come pregnant was your first thought? No, I think I'm just tired of waiting for spring to arrive.....I need some sunshine and warm weather!

I am constantly amazed at how what looks like a plant graveyard can come back to life in the Spring. Totally amazing.
My favourite things to grow are cherry tomatoes and hot peppers. (The bugs pretty well leave the hot peppers alone)

I moved away from my rhubarb, and it looks like there isn't any here at this house. That's okay though.
I plan to put in herb beds. Lots of herbs. I keep having to buy them and that urks me. (I like that word, urks.)

We've had a veg patch for a few years now but this year my husband has gone all out. He's turned most of the front garden into an allotment. I'd love to call it a kitchen garden but it aint pretty! So far though we've already eaten really sweet radish. We've dined on beetroot leaves from thinning them out, delicious with dressing. We're growing all kinds of stuff... Good luck with yours.
