Mori Mori lives on in Sanbiki

A while back I lamented the closing of the Mori Mori grocery store.  Luckily for everyone, I have discovered that Sanbiki revamped the inside of their store to continue selling some grocery products and most importantly their take out prepared meals and sushi.

It is not nearly as big as the former store, but you can get your rice and noodles and sauces and tea when you pick up your yam tempura and spicy chicken and rice.  Or is that just me?

Check it out you guys.  Support local business in the 'Loops.

Country Style Pork Ribs

I'd bought some assorted pork cuts from the University meat store in the Spring, and there were still a few odds and ends packages in the freezer that I wasn't sure what to do with.  One was country style pork ribs which I have never cooked before.
I followed the first recipe that came up in my google search, and it was easy and delicious.

The only flaw was my own - I took them out of the oven and set them aside so I could turn up the heat and get the potatoes cooked faster, and then put them back in to reheat before serving.  They were starting to dry out by that time.  I should have just left them out covered with foil.

But should I get my hands on some country style ribs again this will be the recipe I choose.

Snapshot - savory breakfasts are the best

Right here we've got a whole lot of deliciousness going on - a toasted bagel with roasted pepper, feta cheese and hot sauce. Serious yum.

Book Club - A River Runs Through It by Norman MacLean

'The backbone of a mountain would not break, so the mountain compresses the already powerful river into sound and spray before letting it pass.'

'If you think that what I am about to tell you next is a contradiction to this, then you will have to realize that in Montana drinking beer does not count as drinking.'

'How can a question be answered that asks a lifetime of questions?'

'I am haunted by waters.'

Another visit to Gasthaus

We enjoyed our first visit to The Gasthaus restaurant so much that when we were in the area
again in the Spring, we had to go back.

The Girl and I shared the Black Forest Spaetzle.  So good.  Crunchy onions!!!!

The Mister had a goulash stew that was out of this world.  He always gets the best stuff and I am always jealous.

The Grandmother got the biggest seafood caesar salad I'd ever seen.

Book Club - Elle Magazine

Not sure what Zinio is, and I'm not signing myself up for anything, so I read an Elle magazine that I'd bought at the beginning of Summer when we were away and The Boy and I were sitting out a rainstorm at a Tim Horton's.  I bought this at the drug store next door, but people watching was wayyyyy more fun than any book or magazine could have been that day.

Snapshot - drying peppers

The Mister bought a pepper plant this Spring that he thought was bell pepper
but it turned out to be chile peppers.  It's pretty much the only thing that's growing
this summer - the tomato and zuke plants did nothing,
same with the corn and peas.

I came outside yesterday and discovered that he had picked all the peppers
and strung them up to dry.
Sort of complements the broom, don't it?

Sunday Dinner - Steak and Victoria Sponge

This one was a special celebration Sunday dinner, so The Grandpa splurged and brought some really really nice steaks from Costco over for bbq-ing.
The Mister did a magnificent job grilling them.  They were wonderful.  We had the usual steak suspects: baked potatos with sour cream, cheese and chives on the side, grilled asparagus, mushrooms, and salad.  A feast.

For dessert I made Nigella Lawson's Victoria Sponge.
The shot below also includes The Boy's thumb as he took the photo.  What a guy.  :)

The recipe was very easy to make and even with my scraggly cake sides due to a last
minute decision to line the tins with parchment which made them wonky looking,
I thought it was quite impressive.
I tried the food processor method which I didn't love; there was a lot of batter
and I felt it didn't mix well.  But it turned out fine in the end - the cake itself
was flavorful and tender.  I filled ours with peaches and nectarines and that
was ok; but this would be amazing with summer ripe berries.

Burger 55

We got to Burger 55 in Penticton this summer - yay!  It's been on my list for a couple of years - I've read about it online and seen it on You Gotta Eat Here about 37 times.

We had a good meal and took some unappetizing photos.

The kids meals were terrific - great quality and priced well.
The adults all enjoyed their meals - The Grandmother had a salad which was
enormous and she enjoyed it very much; The Grandfather had a salmon burger
that he didn't stop raving about; The Mister had a custom beef burger,
and I tried the portobello mushroom burger.  All very very good.
The staff were very nice and helpful, and I look forward to going back again.

Book Club - Harry Potter and the Cursed Child by JK Rowling

" "The truth is a beautiful and terrible thing, and should therefore be treated with great caution." "

"We cannot protect the young from harm.  Pain must and will come."

"In every shining moment of happiness is that drop of poison; that knowledge that pain will come again."

I am a big Harry Potter fan; I was happy to read this one.  It was good - and I wish I would have the chance to see the actual play.

Book Club - We Should All Be Feminists by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

"We have evolved.  But our ideas of gender have not evolved very much."

Love this book.  This will stay on my bookshelf  and I will be suggesting it to everyone.

__________________________________

I finished reading this on August 31, the last day of the Summer Reading Club.  I read 9 books in two months.  For me, lately, that is a LOT.  I haven't read that much since before The Boy was born.
I'll finish off the Club list, then Book Club will return to whatever is on my shelf and at the library.

Sunday Dinner - Chicken Stir Fry and Honey Wheat Cookies

The Sunday Dinners are rolling along. This one started with a recipe I found for a
pork belly and chinese broccoli stir fry. I had no belly or (chinese) broccoli
so I subbed in chicken and onions, peppers and zucchini.
Then I made some changes to the sauce, so in the end it was nothing
like the recipe that inspired me. But a delicious dinner that will never be exactly
repeated as I didn't write anything down and didn't save the original inspiration recipe.

Dessert was bonkers good - Honey Wheat Cookies from Dorie Greenspan.  So wonderful!!!!!!  I will make these again and again - a new favorite.

Recipe here.

I can't believe the Summer is over.  We didn't do even a quarter of all the fun things - and chores - we'd planned.  Time keeps on slipping, baby......

Book Club - Jonathan Livingston Seagull by Richard Bach

" 'Jonathan,' he said, and these were the last words he spoke.  'Keep working on love,'  When they could see again, Chiang was gone."

70's, baby.
