Calgary Chinatown

The last week Scott and I were in Calgary we made sure to do some fun things. We went to the Zoo, we ate Thai food on my birthday, and we spent a few hours in Chinatown.

Calgary's Chinatown is one of the largest in Canada. Located downtown right by the river, it's a really pretty area with lots of trees and gorgeous old buildings.

We started out at Scott's favorite sub shop Trung Nguyen Vietnamese Submarine. They have the best Vietnamese Subs in Calgary, I am sure of it. Delicious and cheap (all subs are under $6.50). We split a satay beef sub.

The bread was warm, there was lots of carrot, onion, cucumber, cilantro, and cheese. The beef was tender and spicy. Yummy sauce too. It was the perfect sub.

Because we were moving out of town in just a few days it was a "look don't touch" shopping trip. I hate those!

I love how you come across unexpected beautiful details down in Chinatown. Fish down an alley:

and more decorating a parkade:

Finally it was snack time! After making a quick stop in a shop selling nothing but rice cookers we came across a small restaurant called the Dessert House. We almost didn't go in because we didn't want dessert. I am so glad we did. In addition to dessert, the small eatery also has juices, teas, soups and snacks on the menu. We tried a watermelon/cantaloupe juice and a coconut/pineapple juice. Both were wonderful.

We split a bowl of rice noodles (my favorite!) with satay sauce, pork balls and Chinese chives. It was so good. I wasn't crazy about the pork balls, but Scott loved them. I was crazy about the Chinese chives. They were almost asparagus-like and burst when you bit down on them.

We rolled ourselves out of the restaurant to do some more walking. There may have been one more stop for tea and another snack, but I'm not telling.

Broccoli and soy sauce

Chop up some broccoli and set it aside. Finely chop some garlic and fresh ginger. Heat a bit of oil in a pan, add the garlic and ginger and cook for one minute until very fragrant. Add the broccoli and cook, stirring often, until the broccoli is tender crisp. Add a bit of water if needed. When the broccoli is ready, sprinkle in some soy sauce, toss and serve.
