Sprouts

When I posted on Saturday I included a picture of my sprouts that I was growing, pretty much because the picture wasn't blurry and that have been a novel thing on this blog lately. Both Deborah and Cris asked me to share some information about how I grew the sprouts.

There's really not much to tell. I've been growing sprouts on and off for years and years. I have always used Mumm's brand. They have starter kits which contain seeds, 2 pieces of netting and 2 rubber bands.

Basically you put a spoonful of seeds into a jar (like a large yogurt container or spaghetti jar) and cover the top with the mesh netting. You can also use cheesecloth in place of the netting. Secure it in place with the rubber band. Fill the jar half full of water and let it sit over night. The next day drain off the water and place the jar upside down at an angle, so the water can drain off. Don't forget to throw away any water that drains out of the jar. Leave the jar on the counter (it does not need to be in direct sunlight) and then twice a day rinse and drain the seeds. They should start to sprout in a day or two. Grow the sprouts until they are 2" or so long, and then you can start eating them. I prefer to grow small amounts at a time so the sprouts don't go bad before I get through them all.

You can also grow spouts the old fashioned way - in soil! Fill a small pot or even a margarine container with dirt, then plant seeds - like beet, broccoli, etc - quite thickly. When the plants have sprouted to 1 or 2 inches high, simply cut them off and eat them.

Sprouts are tasty and fabulous for you. You can add them to sandwiches and wraps, toss them into salads, or eat them just as is. When I have ready to eat sprouts my favorite breakfast is a flour tortilla spread with hummus and topped with chopped tomatos and fresh sprouts. Mmm-mmm!

Yikes that is so incredible to think that something as simple as "tortilla spread with hummus and topped with chopped tomatos and fresh sprouts" is just the most perfect bite I can imagine right now! I haven't done sprouts for so long.

This reminds me of being in 1st Grade and growing a lima bean on a paper napkin.

Have to admit, in theory I love sprouts but in practice, not so much. I don't know why :-( I like the idea of them. I buy them. But I always end up throwing most of them away because they have this weird "hairy" texture in my mouth.

Maybe I just need to grow my own?

yum sprouts! Do they have Jimmy John's sandwich shops in your neck of the woods? That's what got me hooked on sprouts. I've never grown them before--will have to look into that!

I love that idea! Now, do they just keep growing? Or do they grow, you eat them and you have to start over? I'm not Farmer Brown.

I love sprouts and hummus on pita with shredded carrots and cukes.

Hi Sara, glad to see you've settled in! And into such a nice kitchen at that. The flat top stoves are super, BF's mom has one and it's so much easier to clean, IMO. Plus you always knew which burner was on b/c it glows bright red.

Neat post about growing sprouts! Reminds me of how my mom accidentally discovered that she could grow green onions if she left regular onions alone long enough. When I asked her if they were safe to eat, she just said "Well, it hasn't killed any of us yet!" :)

Tanna - I didn't have time to make myself a wrap for breakfast today, but I'll have one tomorrow for sure.

Mary - home grown - at least alfalfa - are pretty much the same texture as store bought. Maybe you would like pea sprouts, or radish?

Tavolini - never heard of it. Must be a sandwich shop I am guessing?

Geggie - nope, you eat them up and grow some more! I love carrot and hummous together.

Glitterati - thanks! I guess I'm mainly scared because of the horror stories people tell me about the tops cracking.

Thanks Sara. This is on my to-do list. Which is entirely to long, so I'm moving it to the top. :)

This is so interesting, i had no idea you could grow sprouts this way. I am not sure I am disciplined enough to tend them twice a day but maybe one day. I love sprouts too.

I remember making sprouts with my family in the early 80's. We always used an old piece of panty hose for the top of the jar. LOL
